Thermarest ble født da en av grunnleggerne, John Burroughs, lette etter, men ikke kunne finne en bra madrass. Som erfaren fjellklatrer visste John at de tynne skumplastmadrassene fra det tidlige 70-tallet åpnet opp for en mulighet til å skape en madrass med større komfort for brukeren. Siden han selv etterspurte et slikt produkt, følte han seg sikker på at den ville selge. Den største drivkraften bak Thermarest var å hjelpe mennesker med å nyte fjellet og andre ville steder.
