Many experienced hikers consider Padjelanta to be one of the country's most beautiful mountain areas. Perhaps it is the large lakes and open expanses that form the foundation for the experience of beauty, being able to see the sun set behind the high peaks to the west in unobstructed view. Surely, the area's unique and rare flora also contributes to the beauty. This part of the mountain world is also full of history. The Swedish Tourist Association's first mountain cabin was established here in 1888 as a stop on the country's only hiking trail in the mountains, which ran between Kvikkjokk and the early popular Sulitelma. But long before today's mountain tourism, this was the area of the Sami people, and it still is today. As a mountain hiker, you will pass several Sami settlements and you will surely be offered to buy both glödkaka (traditional Sami bread) and char. This book describes all stages of the Padjelanta Trail, but also the trails around the very alpine mountain massif Sulitelma on the Norwegian-Swedish border. The book also describes the trail down to Hellemobotn in Norway, which ends with a dramatic canyon and a fascinating fjord landscape.
